Here's how often you should be replacing your CPAP gear

By now, you’re likely aware of how essential it is to keep your CPAP gear clean. However, cleaning alone isn’t enough over time. For your therapy to remain comfortable and effective, it’s just as important to routinely check your equipment and replace worn parts when needed.

Use the following simple guidelines to assess your gear and know when it’s time to replace components—before they begin to impact your therapy or your sleep quality.

Let’s begin with your mask—arguably the most crucial component in any CPAP setup. Can you remember when you last replaced it? Like everyday health items such as toothbrushes or razors, CPAP masks lose effectiveness and hygiene over time.

To ensure optimal performance and comfort, make it a habit to inspect your mask regularly for signs of wear. Some parts may need replacing sooner than you'd expect.

Mask Cushions – Replace Every 6 Months

Mask cushions sit against your face every night and can quickly accumulate dirt, oils, and bacteria. Without proper maintenance, they can break down, causing leaks, discomfort, and even skin irritation.

Replacement frequency depends on the material:

  • Silicone cushions should be replaced every 6 months

  • Memory foam cushions are designed to be replaced monthly

Mask Frame – Replace Every 6 to 12 Months

Most modern frames are made from medical-grade silicone, which can stiffen over time. These should ideally be replaced every 6 months.
Older frames made from durable plastic may last longer, depending on how well they’re maintained. If you notice any cracks, damage, or discolouration, replace them right away.

Mask Headgear – Replace Every 6 Months

Over time, headgear can lose its elasticity and stretch out, resulting in a poor fit. A clear sign it's time for a replacement is when you're constantly overtightening it to maintain a proper seal.

For best results, plan to replace your headgear approximately every 6 months to keep your mask secure and your therapy effective.

While CPAP devices typically outlast masks, regular maintenance is key to ensuring they continue to perform at their best. On average, we recommend replacing your CPAP machine every 5 years to benefit from the latest advancements in comfort and technology.

In addition to the machine itself, certain components should be replaced on a schedule—even if they don’t look visibly worn. Think of it like routine car maintenance: replacing filters and fluids helps the engine run longer, and the same goes for your CPAP.

CPAP Air Filters – Replace Every 2 Months

Air filters trap dust and airborne particles that could affect your breathing. If not replaced regularly, they can become clogged and lead to reduced airflow, poor hygiene, or even trigger allergies. Replace filters every 2 months, or more frequently if you live in a dusty environment.

CPAP Tubing – Replace Every 12 Months

CPAP tubing can develop small cracks or pinholes over time, resulting in air leaks and reduced therapy effectiveness. For optimal performance, we recommend replacing your tubing once a year, or immediately if any damage is detected.

CPAP Humidification Tubs – Replace Every 12 Months

Humidifier water chambers are prone to bacterial buildup and mineral deposits, especially when tap water is used. To help extend their lifespan, use distilled or filtered water and clean the tub regularly. Still, it’s best to inspect it monthly and replace it every 12 months.

Feeling overwhelmed by all the maintenance? A simple routine can help:

  • Inspect your mask whenever you clean it

  • Check your machine components whenever you change your sheets

These quick habits can go a long way in keeping your therapy clean, comfortable, and effective.
